‘Floridians Unite for Health Care’ coalition today commends Florida House Speaker Jose Oliva (R-Miami Lakes) for recognizing Brittany DeCastro, APRN, as the Nurse Practitioner of the Day in the Legislative Clinic.
“I’m extremely grateful to be in the Capitol today serving as the Nurse Practitioner of the Day in the Legislative Clinic,” said DeCastro. “House Bill 607 by Representative Pigman is a great stride forward to increasing health care access to our Florida families. I thank House Speaker Oliva for his leadership on this very important issue and for this recognition. This legislation has the ability to allow more than 32,000 APRNs, like myself, to supplement health care options for patients and provide specialty services for patients across our state.”
DeCastro is an APRN affiliated with the Southeastern Plastic Surgery group in Tallahassee, Fla. She is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and has also earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.
Representative Cary Pigman, M.D. (R-Avon Park) is the sponsor of HB 607, relating to Health Care Practitioners, in the Florida House. HB 607 would allow APRNs to be able to practice to the full extent of their education and training. Speaker Oliva has also expressed his support for the bill.
“Florida is ranked 41st for health care access and affordability,” said Nicole Livanos, senior associate in state advocacy and legislative affairs for National Council of State Boards of Nursing and a spokesperson for the ‘Floridians Unite for Health Care’ coalition. “To address this lack of access to affordable health care, our coalition is asking Florida lawmakers to support legislation to remove barriers to safe and quality care by APRNs this session. Sixty-two percent of low-income children do not have a doctor in Florida. It is time that we modernize the way we provide health care in Florida, and one solution is Representative Pigman’s HB 607.”
